Here is my newly installed blog, a subdirectory of a website I’m currently building, http://www.cookbookauctions.com . The main website promotes cookbook auctions listed on eBay, the purpose of the blog is to give tips and advice regarding buying cookbooks on eBay and elsewhere. Hopefully, the blog will provide useful information to drive traffic to the auctions listed on the home page.

I am very excited about your pre-course! I installed my blog–thanks to Rosalind’s crystal clear instructions and am looking forward to getting things running.

I am working with Jeff Walker’s Product Launch course and needed to get a blog up so I want to use it for that, but also have another website that I am working on that ties in with it as well==>http://www.help-with-home-improvements.com

My husband has run his own contracting company for 30 years and 3 yrs. ago was diagnosed with MS. As he can no longer perform the physical aspects of his work he was looking for a way to keep “working” in his area of “expertise”. Providing help and information for people in the home improvement niche seems like a way to do that.

Of course we also want to replace his income…so this is what we are working on! The blog I just installed is at http://www.doctoryourhome.com/myblog

Thanks for the help you are providing!!! Karla

I have several blogs and have been blogging for a few years now, and I blog about what I am passionate about. This blog is about health, as I think everyone should get and stay healthy.
But most people associate health with sickness and don’t look into staying healthy until they get sick, and that gives them a negative attitude about health. So here is my URL for my blog

I’ve included my blog here. I haven’t kept up much with it at all. I continue to be on email lists and continue to work with the materials of several teachers from ‘The Secret’. I actually have some great info I could be sharing there now (I have to leave this moment, but at least you guys have given me that motivation.)
I have a question though. I created that blog without a cpanel. Do I need one? If so, what is it for? Or will my site do with a little tweaking? I think I need to remove a post or two and update my main page. Some things seem out-dated compared to when I posted them and now. Please let me know about the cpanel, thank-you.

    Hi Frances,
It’s a nice looking blog. The Hello World, although sort of appropriate in your text, is also the standard issue headline from wordpress for unedited text so you might want to change that to something like Holy Cow I’m Communicating or something I don’t know - to keep the vein of your post.
Also try to tag some of your words in your text.
Otherwise keep going - the internet is amazing to talk to people all over the world - I’m in Australia too.

Dan Scanlon reply on April 17, 2008 9:57 pm:

    Anik & Rosiland,

First, I want to thank you both for inspiring me to take action and get off my blogless behind!

Last night I jumped in to see about upgrading my current Website Design website (http://www.doskas.com) to support WordPress. After some time with tech support & following their directions, I added MySQL & got their version of WordPress (v2.3.3) installed. Long story short, it didn’t work…

Since I want to take advantage of following the tutorials & actually learn (instead read along in a non-participatory manner) I went directly to WordPress & set myself up with a freebie version of a blog so as to at least get started. Yes, I know its not tied to a website yet. I have decided I will follow through and get my new domain (still doing keyword research to narrow down my niche & domain name) and hosting with BlueHost, later.

Although I am now the proud owner of a humble “orphan” blog, I hope that your concepts you are continuing to teach can be applied to it. In this way, I can go through the 2nd time for real with my new, future niche website. As it stands, my blog is http://danscanlon/wordpress.com

    Thanks again!

    Hi Roz and Anik,

The reason I started my blog is because my mom recently died of cancer, and I just started researching and I came up with alot of interesting stuff, and felt that I needed to share it.

I have a blog through blogger.com, is this one okay, or do I need a wordpress one also? I also do not have a domain yet or hosting. I know you prefer bluehost, however, I checked into that and they want 2 yrs of hosting up front which is about $167 and I know that is not alot, however, I am a single mom, and the job I have don’t pay enough for me to have extras, would godaddy be okay, because I can pay them monthly which fits my budget, but I checked and they do not have fantastico.

Any advise is greatly appreciated. Also, if you have time, check out my blog and let me know what you think.

    Thanks,
    Paula

Malcolm reply on April 18, 2008 2:20 am:

    Hi Paula

Really sorry to hear about your mom. I hope all is well with you now.

I just thought I would bring to your attention that you do not have to spend $167 for a hosting account

If you go to http://www.webhostingbuzz.com and by the cheapest budget package they have on offer. You even get a free domain name which is good. Pick a good domain name carefully.

I think you can get this for about $54.00 a year with more stuff than many high priced priced hosting packages. I know, I have several and I use webhostingbuzz.com from now on.

    I hope this helps.

Gary Packer reply on April 25, 2008 2:49 pm:

    Hi Paula,

I empathise with you. I lost my mother to cancer almost 20 years ago, and I still miss her every day.

However, to help with your hosting. I use Hostgator at http://www.hostgator.com . They start from as little as $8.95 a month, but with this you only get 1 domain name. I think it is better to pay an extra $1 a month and get the next level up as you can host unlimited domains.

They also do unlimited MySQL which you will need for Wordpress and if you have many sites hosted, this is useful.

I know on the site they say from as little as $4.95 a month, but that is if you pay a lump sum for 3 years.

In the two years that I have been with Hostgator I have not had a single problem with downtime, so they are very reliable.

    Good luck.

    Kind Regards,

    Gary

Kathy reply on April 21, 2008 6:58 am:

Posts are quicker and easier as long as the search engine stuff is still tweaked. A page, must be informative and brief and again SEO’d well. I often do both, start with a post that leads to the page, that way it gives the visitor the option - they get quick info and can read on if they like.

I should have opened my email sooner. I am PWM (Player With Money) and working an IM course with Alex Goad. Blogs were recommended, so I installed it on my host, Bluehost. I did it the hard way, by falling WordPress 2.5’s, “5 Minute Installation”. Just had to name the database and edit some info, they even tell you what your missing if you don’t get it right. The only thing you forgot to mention in your video is that you can set up multiple installations by changing the _wp to something else.

Anyways, although I am not familiar with PHP, I am with HTML and I have been playing around and tweaking the style.css. Almost got it to where I want it.

Really, interested in getting to the traffic and monetization section. See you there.

Dave Perkins reply on April 22, 2008 7:19 am:

I started blogging two or three years ago with my Mentor, Doug Williams (of MoneyLegs.com fame). He had one of those monthly fee blogs that he made available prior (I believe) to WordPress, Blogspot.com and others.

My hosting company does not use Fantastico so I had to manually install my Wordpress blog via FTP but it was just as easy as it was reported to be.

This past weekend, I installed a new blog for my wife on her new website that she’s starting, using CPanel and Fantastico and I was amazed to see just how FAST the whole process went. Her site is on HostMonster.com’s servers which I believe are quite similar to BlueHost that you recommend.

My blog can be found at: http://www.daveylee.com/blog

I’ll suggest that my wife pick up at lesson two and follow along with me. I’ll pick up some great tips, I’m sure, and she will be ‘learning from scratch’ as she’s not the most ‘technical type’ in our family.

As you can tell, I’m a bit late getting started but as they say, better late than never.

AdSense ads are in place and “I Recommend” Amazon links are there, and until a couple of days ago my posts appeared in Google Alerts. But this hasn’t been a paying proposition by any means so far. Haven’t been using list building yet. I’d really like to get real estate sales, landscaping design, green architecture, and permaculture certification course clients for the back end. Jewel,

You want to start by getting a domain name - I recommend http://www.Godaddy.com.

Then you will need to get hosting and point that domain to that hosting.

    Rosalind recommends - http://www.BlueHost.com

Once you get your hosting set-up, you will get instructions on how to enter your CPANEL. The first screen that Rosalind starts at is the CPANEL - your hosting company will send your instructions for that.

OK, so I’ll be the problem child for all of you….

Was I suppose to already “know” that I was to have a domain name and host site? Somehow, I must have missed that.

I spent quite a bit of time figuring all this out. I finally did get it figured out and I went with Bluehost, but when I got to my Cpanel 11, and I was suppose to click on WordPress 2.5, it didn’t have 2.5 listed. It only has 2.3.3 listed. So now I am stuck on how to download the 2.5 version. I click on download for the 2.5 and it wants to download it to MY hard drive.

I don’t understand how I can be the ONLY one who is having this problem????? I do think it would be very helpful if there was some information that gave instructions on getting a domain name and a host site.

I’m assuming this video is targeted at newbies, yes? And if that is the case, they will not know this information.

The video just was not helpful to me as it left out so many steps. I ended up having to figure out everything on my own but I will say that it at least motivated me to do it although I was expecting it to be much less time consuming.

I ran into the same thing with Blue Host, I wen to their Forums and found out, that for the 2.5 they don’t use Fantastico they use Simple Scripts, which is in Cpanel also.
You need to sign up with Simple Scripts, it’s free and you just have to enter your email and they send you a password, you do all this in Cpanel, hope that helps.

    Hi Jewel,
OK I had a bit of the same drama and this is what you do.
Download the 2.5 to YOUR hard drive. Then open up the zip file until you have 2.5 folder which is in a window. Copy and paste the folder into one of your folders or your desktop where you can find it. THEN through Cpanel navigate to wp-admin then on your left hand side navigate to the file you just copied. If you’re using filezilla highlight the file and right mouse and upload. This will upload 2.5 to your bluehost. Hope that helped. It worked for me, but yes the videos took a bit of watching to get that clear too, but the info is there. Email me if you want any more
help with the plug ins etc. Cpanel is a bit tricky but FINALLY I’m getting it after watching these videos and I do recommend knowing it.

  40. admin reply on

    Hey Jewel,

I can understand your frustration - we’re just trying to make the course the most powerful for as many people at one time.

If you’re using Fantastico - it really should have the latest Wordpress in there - if not, ask your server company about it. They may be waiting to do an update.

OR, just go ahead and go with the latest version they DO have. As long as you use Fantastico to install it, you can easily upgrade to the latest one when Fantastico adds it on your server (with a few clicks).

Having some problems when you start is GOING to happen, no one can really avoid them - so just keep chugging along and asking questions like you are.

I have also had trouble viewing the video; it keeps stalling. However, I’ll perservere and hope that it will eventually fix itself.

One of the advantages of learning the stuff in this course is that it does make it a little more cost friendly and also gives you a bit more design and plug in flexibility than SBI. Don’t get me wrong I LOVE SBI I have four sites through them but this way of blogging is another form of web mastery.

Problem is I already have a website up and running and want to add the blog to it. I am hosting with godaddy which as you know does not have cPanel interphase.

Any tips? Apart from the obvious which is to get a new hosting account. I actually like godaddy

You could get a free wordpress blog and point it to your site or yeah, host it through bluehost and have it point to your site at godaddy or vice versa - have your godaddy site point to bludhost. I have both as well and I’m finding bluehost way more flexible and user friendly than godaddy.

Is it possible that you guys can provide MORE information on what we need to do PRIOR to getting to our cpanel. (If you do I’m sure it WILL save others lots of time and the frustration that I experienced!)

I spent hours last night getting it figured out, signed up with Bluehost, spent about $168.00, and then downloaded WP (an outdated version but the only one they had), AND NOW I read in order to do WP “you will need a certain level of technical experience and the ability to edit PHP code”. ARG! and double ARG!!

Is this true? Please tell me it’s not so. I thought this was going to be “easy”. Can you reassure me?

I would have never spent the money on Bluehost only to get an outdated version of WP and then to find out that I need to learn PHP code too!

I’m assuming you guys are using this FREE course to work out the glitches and therefore I am the guinea pig…So I am assumming you want feedback on what we are experiencing at this end even though you haven’t actually stated that.

If that isn’t the case, could you kindly let me know and I won’t send further posts related to problems I am experiencing. Thank you.

    Jewel,

Please read the comment I made last night in regards to the trouble you are having. You DON’T need technical expertise to get WordPress installed…

    ===

    Jewel,

I just called BlueHost and they have not yet upgraded their systems for the Fantastico that supports Wordpress 2.5. This version is actually VERY new, just out a few weeks ago so some systems still need to go through the update.

Basically, don’t worry about it - go ahead and use Fantastico to install the latest version they DO have. Your interface will be a bit different than what you see on the future videos, but it’s not “that” big of a deal at all.

Also, when they end up upgrading Fantastico (any day now) - it will be very easy for you to upgrade with a few clicks.

HOWEVER, if you get it self-installed, upgrading in the future is not easy - that’s why using Fantastico is preferred.

Of course I guess the other option is that you can refund this order and go with a different web hosting - I just don’t think that’s really that necessary.

    Hope this helps!

admin reply on April 16, 2008 2:00 pm:

Ahh I see what you mean…

Here’s the deal with that - if you decide in the future that you want to get “spiffy” with your blog and add all these neat and new features - then yes, you may end up needing some PHP coding. I, personally, can’t code worth a dime, but it’s VERY inexpensive to get someone to help you at:
    http://www.Scriptlance.com

But then again, there are now HUNDREDS of Wordpress “plugins” that you can just easily (with a few clicks) install and they’ll do most of everything you’ll ever want.

So, in short - no, I don’t think you’ll have any immediate need to know PHP. In the future if you want to get really spiffy with it, it should be making money by then and then you can afford to just get some inexpensive help over at Scriptlance.com, guru.com, elance.com, rentacoder.com, etc…

Big Thanks on your info. on BlueHost!

I know you guys don’t know what we go through at this end unless it is communicated…not to mention we are newbies!

But after I downloaded the 2.3.3 version, WP constantly kept telling me to upgrade. When I read all the technical steps to receive their upgrade I didn’t want to touch it with a 20 foot pole and not even a 50 foot pole! They also said don’t use the old version as you won’t be able to upgrade without lots of problems…..It sounds like that is not the case either, as long as I do it through my server, yes?

So…thank you very much for the information on waiting to upgrade through my server and that it is OK to still use the older version, AND I should be sure to use Fantastico when I do upgrade.

This is exactly the kind of reassurance us newbies need! TY!

    Hey Janet,

In short, here is what you should do.

    1. Register a domain name (www.godaddy.com)

    2. Get hosting (bluehost.com) - our affiliate link :) http://www.bluehost.com/track/rgardner/blogclassroom

    3. Then grab your thank you email from bluehost, place it infront of you and call Godaddy.

    4. Godaddy will help you do a thing call “change nameservers” - trust me, it sounds MUCH MORE technical than it is, it takes 15 seconds.

    5. Give it a few hours and then log-in to your Cpanel (again, your thank you email from the hosting should have instructions on how to do this).

    6. Find the Fantastico link and get going!

I went to Bluehost and signed up for a cpanel, got the welcome letter, but can’t find the blog :) How do I access it? My domain was registered with Godaddy, will that be a problem? and lastly,
I am not really sure I grasp the whole reason for the blog as opposed to a website or should I plan to have both?

I am truly grateful for any help you can offer.

    Thank you,

    [Reply]

admin reply on April 17, 2008 2:03 am:

    Hey Nancy,

I’ll actually do a video soon about the whole “blog vs. website” issue - in short - stick to the blog, that IS a website (and an easy one to manage).

As for “finding the blog” - the first thing you need to do is change your “DNS nameservers” on Godaddy to point to your host.

DOOON’T worry - it’s not that bad. Do this…take the “thank you email” you got from your hosting company and put it infront of you - now CALL the godaddy technical support.

They’ll walk you right through it, but they’ll need to know something that will be on your hosting thank you email.

Once the domain name is pointing from Godaddy to your bluehost server, you can log into the Cpanel and you’ll see a Fantastico link there - then you can pick up from Ros’s video.

As for Godaddy - last I remember, a couple of years back, their servers did not have Cpanel (I’m SURE they’ve changed that now).

Cpanel is actually DEAD easy to use - just IGNORE and AVOID anything other than the buttons we are telling you to click and you’ll be safe.

Trying to inject some humor and guess it needs lots of posts (I was thinking just humorous stuff to get Socially bookmarked but aimed at a country) e.g. ‘Germany - don’t mention the war!’ ‘Why Frenchmen think they are the best lovers’ etc. or is that to much of a soft sell?

I wrote a lot of poetry in high school so this topic was a natural fit for me as well. I look forward to getting traffic to my site using the methods you provide.

You can do the posts on the theme you have and when the new theme is added the posts will still be there, all the new theme does is change the look of the site.
Here’s a link to how to change your wordpress theme:
    http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Themes

Scroll down to the using themes part and it talks about adding new themes via cpanel.

i got frustrated and went to blogger (inserted site above) but would love to do it ALL OVER WITH my paintoilpainting.com and wordpress.
how should i start over , I took alook at the site lastnight and it now appears as a error 404, where as before it was just a white page without a template.

  108. I’m a former student of Blog Classroom.

This blog is all about the art of manifesting. How to draw into your life what you want. I hope to get interaction from others on their manifesting abilities, as well as sharing my experiences. It’s based on the “Law of Attraction” philosophy and the principles of Abraham-Hicks.

I set this blog up through a service called Blogi360, where I pay a monthly membership fee. One of their services: each time I make a post, it gets picked up in the social network sites. I was hoping to learn how to do this on other blogs where I won’t have to pay a membership fee. Will this be one of the features you will be teaching?

I have other blogs on typepad. The one I’ve used the most is http://www.linda-woods.typepad.com/windowstowellness where I post comments about my weekly radio show on healing, self help and empowerment. I would like to transfer this blog and others to wordpress. Will you be teaching how to transfer a blog and all its content into Wordpress?

    Thank you so much

    Hi,
you may call me an idiot, or kind of idiot, or whatever, but cannot figure out how this really well prepared stuff is working. Due to never using blogs and things like that (always supposed this will not work out for sign ups, just small talking around, and did my email marketing instead) I have no experience in this field.
OK, your videos are easy to follow, nevertheless I always thought blogs (web logs) are just copy (text) but what I see here (the first 3 you have been talking about) are looking like real web pages. That makes me wonder.
Secondly, the video “How to install a wordpress blog in 3 easy steps” is great - but what about this cPanel, Rosalind is explaining so nice? I have no cPanel. The only thing I did was to join digg.com as required in assignment #1.
I can only hope I will get this under control, all my best regards, Peter

  119. Hi Ros,

This is such a great way to help new people, thank you, both you and Anik! I’ve been following your blog emails, Ros, for over a year, planning to build a website around the theme of my passion: I have an offline business helping people manage stress with meditation, and coaching and counseling clients to spiritually connect with their inner guidance.

I was distracted from this by injury, job loss, surgeries, and then lately having had a breast mass removed last September and the ongoing surveillance. When I lost my “job” I already had a plan in place. Fortunately, my part-time passion, teaching and counseling, grew into a full practice by word-of-mouth in spite of all my physical challenges. I continued my clientelle practice during the worst of all this, yet I stopped teaching for 6 months while healing.

The good news is I am well and kicking butt–and your recent experience and openness about it really inspired me! I have finally regained my strength and am planning new classes. And my clientele practice is growing again! My students and clients have repeatedly requested that I create a site, so in January 2008 I finally started one with a blog: http://www.TeleMeditationRetreats.com/blog

I used some of your tips, including building my site with SiteSell and my blog with WordPress. Though I am no geek, I kept emailing or calling the tech folks who helped me figure it out. I am more confident now after 3 months of staying the course.

So I encourage others with no tech knowledge and other distractions to just dive in and start! It’s fun to finally have a website and blog, yet I know there is so much more I can do with it. I can’t wait to learn more from you and Anik, as I really need help. Especially on how to monetize, which you can see I have only tentatively started.

One of the questions I have is the concern some marketers have talked about, putting their affiliate links out there and supposedly leaving them open to hackers. Yet I don’t want to buy their “solutions” or do anything unethical if I’d risk ruining my newly established affiliate status (I have joined several programs in my field). Can you or will you be addressing this topic in this course or have you addressed it elsewhere?

    Many kind regards,

    Donna

  136. Well, Rosalind & Anik,

I just finished your 3 rich content-laden videos for today (great stuff!). I now see the weakness in using the “freebie” WordPress Blog I set up. Most all of the special feautures you describe don’t exist on the “freebie”. I was able to download, but of course could not upload via FTP the SEO tools to this free version of WordPress (that is more incentive for me to do the right thing!). I liked the walk-through familiarization of the FTP software. I use Core FTP Lite, very similar.

But in the meantime, I did make my time useful, nontheless. I signed up on ClickBank & became an affiliate marketer on your ‘Handbook’, Rosalind! I was also able to dig in the WordPress templates & other features to much improve the look of the interface. Please vist http://danscanlon.wordpress.com & offer me some constructive criticsm. I pasted your code into the middle of today’s blog posting.

Who would have thought blogging could be fun?! :-)

You should consider updating your blog to the latest version of Wordpress, especially if you haven’t done an update for awhile. Some of the previous versions were a little less than secure, which could cause some issues when you get going with it again and it becomes popular. Hackers notice popular blogs.

  150. Christopher posted this to my Help Desk…

    Hi Rosalind!

In the first BlogClassroom, you recommended for our permalink structure to be…
    /%category%/%postname%

I noticed in the new videos for BlogClassroom, you recommended…
    /%postname%/

Is this structure any better for SEO, or other purposes, than the one at the top?

    Thanks!
    Have a great day!

    Great question, Christopher!

Information on the Wordpress Codex specifies:

If you use postname as the only element in your permalinks to create a structure such as example.com/post-title, the rewrite rules may make it impossible to access pages such as your stylesheet (which has a similar format) or the /wp-admin/ folder…

HOWEVER, they go on to question whether that is still true in Wordpress versions later than 2 and it has never been an issue for me with the later versions.

They also say that if you assign multiple categories to a post, only one can show up in the permalink, and that will be the one with the lowest number assigned to it… or the earliest category that you set up.

My personal rationale for no longer adding /%category%/ to the permalink is that the shorter the URL, the more likely the search engines will concentrate on the keywords in my title… and so far it seems to work really, really well.

I hope that answered your question.

    Cheers,
    Ros

Is there a way to to use GoDaddy Without Fantastico? Or is it essential? I’m already paying for 2 hosting plans with GoDaddy and hate to have to add a third! These are “shared” with several other sites I run, one of which is the main site for the blog.
Are you familiar with HostGator? I’ve heard lots of good things about them, but don’t know if they support Fantastico.
    Thanks again apppreciate it!

We were on the verge of giving up when we stumbled upon your book and SBI. Together these two have been fantastic! I went from “spending” $200 a month in hosting fees and traffic services to “earning” $200 or more a month steadily by following your books step-by-step guide and using the easy tools SBI provided me.

Now I’m ready for the next big step and we are so excited!

I have been dreaming of setting up a new blog, but has been in the “Someday I’lle-land” for so long mainly because the first blog I made was a flop. Rosalind, with your clear instructions, there is no more excuse for me not too. I bought your Super Affiliate program this week and I am wondering if I can use this blog for affiliates. I also heard Anik at the IMC conference in LA and I am impressed. Yes, Rosalind, Anik is adorable!

    Hi Elbert,
I am in the same boat, used blogger, then the free wordpress. After all the work, which realy can be considered practice, right, I found out the “WHYs” of NOT using blogger or free wordpress.
By singing up with BlueHost or other, and using a paid version through a host server, when the “big bucks” come through SEO, we won’t have to move our info to a more compatible venue, thus not loosing all previous SEO stuff along the way. I have lots of domain names with GoDaddy, but I will start over from the beginning. It just wasn’t clear in the first video, that you must “buy” services to later reap benifits.
So, for beginners like us…Step one: buy a domain name, from a hostplan that has Cpanel, and Fantastico. A search of those key words could work. I actually did live chat with each one host company to ask if they had wordpress 2.5..Hope that answers your questions….back to the drawing board.
At least we are not too far behind!

Not only have I never heard of “Wordpress” before coming to this site today, the term “CPanel with Fantastico” may as well be newly discovered rock formations on Mars. Can we please start at Step 1 here. How do we get “Wordpress” and where do we install it? Isn’t a blog usally hosted by someone else, Blogger for example?

    [Reply]

Justin reply on April 20, 2008 3:35 pm:

If your host supports WordPress than they should be more than happy to help you get it installed on your site. For Example if you use Bluehost scroll down until you get to software and services. If your host supports Fantastico there will be a little blue guy smiling at you click him. Scroll down to WordPress. Click it then click New installation. Thats all teher is to it. Your website host then hosts your blog, which you can install on your homepage or on a different page like http://www.example.com/blog/

Nowhere explained what this cpanel itself is and how to get it - THIS is necessary BEFORE we are going to start with the whole course.
Sorry guys, without this stuff a real beginner is helpless - but you always say, beginners will have absolutely NO problems, you are going to explain everything. Don’t you think it is worth for you to spend a little bit of your time ref this matter? If you will not, OK, but can’t your standpoint under the explained circumstances. Then YOU DO NOT TAKE CARE FOR REAL BEGINNERS. I know there are enough student with better basic knowledges, it’s much easier to work with those.

Online Marketing Fundamentals reply on April 20, 2008 7:38 pm:

    Hi Peter

When you get your web hosting organised with a web hosting company, they should all come with some sort of “control panel” which you can log in to setup/manage all sorts of things - including:
    1. setting up email accounts, aliases and forwarders
    2. viewing your statistics
    3. managing the files on your server
    4. adding additional software to your server.

cPanel is just one of these “management consoles” and is fairly simple to use — with one condition — if you don’t know what something does, don’t do it until you ask support LOL

Now… most (but not all) cPanel hosting companies ALSO include Fantastico as part of that management section. Fantastico gives you the ability to select and easily install a range of extra programs (including WordPress) to make your web life easier!

Since cPanel is NOT offered by all web hosting companies, your “homework” is to find a company that DOES offer cPanel WITH Fantastico.

If you can get that, you’ll find a LOT of people who will be able to freely offer advice and suggestions on what you can “do” with it all.

    Hi Pat

I understand how you feel. Maybe I can help. A “blog” is short for “web log”. It is an online journal that is updated frequently by an individual (or groups of individual) where people can interact by leaving comments or posting on the site. Technically, a blog is a website, but it is different from what most people think as website. I believe Anik and Rosalind will talk about that in their next videos.

The first thing you will need is a domain name. You can get one at Godaddy or Yahoo or even from you chosen web host. Most people here, I think use Blue Host. I use Voda Host. They’er about the same. Both have Cpanel (short for Control Panel) where you can find the cute smiley face labelled as “fantastico”. From here you go back to Assignment #1 and you are set.

If you still feel you are lost, ask again. This is how we learn from each other.

    Good Luck.

    Hello Peter, Hello Jim,
you are right sometimes you forget that other people don’t understand what you mean and happily ever after you ask ;0)- The cpanel(control panel)is a graphical web based web hosting panel (software) designed to make administration on websites easy. So if you sign up on bluehost.com (host-domain has his home) Rosalind reveals in the video you only have to click at the graphic and you don’t have to setup scripts (php.. responder) or other software (you must buy..)and this makes a different in your pocket by the way…

Hey Jonas… maybe laziness isn’t the problem :)

Maybe after googling for these keywords, some people are still confused!

The “explanations” offered from the sites listed at the top of a google search are likely to be fairly “technical” and not pitched at putting things into a language that people with few technical skills can easily grasp.

Maybe that is more of the problem… and one we all need to be aware of and address if we are to be successful online.

The purpose of a blog with CPanel is that you don’t always need to use http://FTP. If you have CPanel you can make your own posts as well as pages and you can upload pictures right from CPanel. If you need to upload plugins, go to file manager, click webroot, wp-content, plugins then click upload and choose the plugin/s that you want to upload. If you have not extracted the files yet you will have to do so before you can use them in your control panel.

If your host only offers WordPress 2.3.3 you are fine, your cpanel just wont look like 2.5 and you don’t have as many features. Play around with the features a bit and you will find out where everything is. WordPress 2.5 has only been out a couple weeks so they don’t have any(or very more) plugins than you and I have.
Which part of the video has got you “sick of it”
If you are trying to upload plugins the process is basically the same. Just go to your host manager site and scroll down to file manager click it then webroot. Look for wp-content, click it and then click Plugins and Upload. If you have not yet extracted your files then you will have to do so now. If you are just beginning this is no big deal but if you have gigabites on your hosts site you may start to run into problems with a Kb here and there.

  186. Okay the reason we are installing a blog is so that we can sell it later? What is the benefit of installing one versus just signing up for one?

    [Reply]

Justin reply on April 20, 2008 9:59 pm:

Having a dot.com name is preferable to having your blog hosted on an other site because people know you are for real. Most people search for .com and most search engines display .dom Like Ros says, competition pays for advertising, and at as little as $100 a year most people can’t complain. I know people who drink that much in beer every month. You are installing a blog to get search engine attention, which is free advertising, not to sell your blog. If you are an affiliate you want free search engine traffic. Most blogs that I see which are hosted by another website aren’t geared to make money, they basically blog about their life. Web hosting is a minor cost if you make serious affiliate income.

Squarespace is a great platform with a wealth of features.

The ONLY reason we recommend wordpress is just because it’s all open source, free and self-hosted (meaning YOU control it not someone else).

In essence, you can use any platform you want, but many of our videos on April 29th are structured around how to tweak/use Wordpress.

I interned with Google last summer and I’m looking forward to possibly starting up some computer classes in my local neighborhood next month. Any feedback on my blog is appreciated. Thanks!

Well video is great and all, but what about us folks who are deaf ? How can we follow along ?? Everyone is hopping onto the video system but awfully hard for us deaf people to follow along. Sure it is a small #, but if one doesn’t know what to do, it is even HARDER since one doesn’t know what to ask nor where to turn to.

So is there some text typed equivalents that are available somewhere??

Well here we go all fired up and put in place the Blue Host as recommended by Ros” just about an hour ago, followed the vid’s (Excellent by the way) and an hour later it has ground to a halt!!!!

Phoned Blue Host from here in the UK…alas no support for 5 hours as they need to verify my account so nothing to do till 5pm UK time.

Might be worth noting for anyone else that it does take time from opening the account till it is up and running.

  196. Hi - Although I think what you are offering here is excellent - I would like to point out what would appear to be a major oversight.

If I had watched this video 2 months ago - I would have given up immediately as I would have had no idea what cpanel was. I am sure that I would not have been alone in this. I think it is always a mistake to assume that people online have even the smallest amount of technical knowhow. It would also seem sensible to warn people that they need to have cpanel open before they start the video.

I would however like to congratulate you on what you are attempting to do here and hope you will take my comments as positive criticism and an attempt to ensure that the newbie marketers are able to access your information.

    Thank you

  199. Donovan, from what I see, it kind of looks backwards.
The /home looks alright but the rest is wrong.

    /home/public_html/

should be next, then if you are putting your blog in the root directory it would here, but if you are putting it in a subdirectory (which I would recommend), keeps it all together (try to name it something other than blog if you intend to sell products)

    so far
    /home/public_html/myblog/

now here is where you will have to tweak it and if your using wordpress 2.5, they will be asking for a couple of things so they can do the setup.

you will have to create a database and get a password so the script will run and install word press.

    WordPress Installed for Free
Before you read much further, if you, for whatever reason, aren’t inclined to do this type of software installation on your web server/host, you can still use WordPress by requesting the WordPress Install4Free team do the installation for you for free!

Things to Know Before You Begin
Before you begin the install, there are few things you need to have and do.

Things You Need For The Installation
You need access to your site and its directory and software to proceed with the installation. These are:

An access to your web server (via shell or FTP)
    A text editor
An FTP Client (if you need to install WordPress on a remote server)
    Your web browser of choice
Things You Need to Do For The Installation
    Begin your installation by:

Checking to ensure that you and your web host has the minimum requirements to run WordPress.
Download the latest release of WordPress.
Unzip the downloaded file to a folder on your hard drive.
Print this page out so you have it handy during the installation.
    Famous 5-Minute Install
Here’s the quick version of the instructions, for those that are already comfortable with performing such installations. More detailed instructions follow.

Download and unzip the WordPress package, if you haven’t already.
Create a database for WordPress on your web server, as well as a MySQL user who has all privileges for accessing and modifying it.
Rename the wp-config-sample.php file to wp-config.php.
Open wp-config.php in your favorite text editor and fill in your database details.
Place the WordPress files in the desired location on your web server:
If you want to integrate WordPress into the root of your domain (e.g. http://example.com/), move or upload all contents of the unzipped WordPress directory (but excluding the directory itself) into the root directory of your web server.
If you want to have your WordPress installation in its own subdirectory on your web site (e.g. http://example.com/blog/), rename the directory wordpress to the name you’d like the subdirectory to have and move or upload it to your web server. For example if you want the WordPress installation in a subdirectory called “blog”, you should rename the directory called “wordpress” to “blog” and upload it to the root directory of your web server.

Hint: If your FTP transfer is too slow read how to avoid FTPing at : Step 1: Download and Extract.
Run the WordPress installation script by accessing wp-admin/install.php in your favorite web browser.
If you installed WordPress in the root directory, you should visit: http://example.com/wp-admin/install.php
If you installed WordPress in its own subdirectory called blog, for example, you should visit: http://example.com/blog/wp-admin/install.php
That’s it! WordPress should now be installed.

How to install the latest version of WordPress
    Detailed Instructions
    Step 1: Download and Extract
Download and unzip the WordPress package from http://wordpress.org/download/.

If you will be uploading WordPress to a remote web server, download the WordPress package to your computer with your favorite web browser and unzip the package.
If you have shell access to your web server, and are comfortable using console-based tools, you may wish to download WordPress directly to your web server using wget (or lynx or another console-based web browser) if you want to avoid FTPing:
    wget http://wordpress.org/latest.tar.gz
    Then unzip the package using:
    tar -xzvf latest.tar.gz

The WordPress package will extract into a folder called wordpress in the same directory that you downloaded latest.tar.gz.
If you do not have shell access to your web server, or you are not comfortable using console-based tools, you may wish to deploy WordPress directly to your web server using ZipDeploy.
Step 2: Create the Database and a User
If you are using a hosting provider, you may already have a WordPress database set up for you, or there may be an automated setup solution to do so. Check your hosting provider’s support pages or your control panel for clues about whether or not you’ll need to create one manually.

If you determine that you’ll need to create one manually, follow the instructions for accessing phpMyAdmin on various servers, or follow the instructions for Using cPanel or Using phpMyAdmin below.

If you are installing WordPress on your own web server, follow the Using phpMyAdmin or Using the MySQL Client instructions below to create your WordPress username and database.

If you have only one database and it is already in use, you can install WordPress in it - just make sure to have a distinctive prefix for your tables, to avoid over-writing any existing database table.

    Using cPanel
    Main article: Using cPanel

If your hosting provider uses cPanel, you may follow these instructions to create your WordPress username and database.

    Log in to your cPanel.
    Click MySQL Databases.
If a user relating to WordPress does not already exist under the Users section, create one:
Chose a username for WordPress (’wordpress’ is good) and enter it in the UserName field.
Choose a difficult-to-guess password (ideally containing a combination of upper- and lower-case letters, numbers, and symbols), and enter it in the Password field.
Write down the username and password you chose.
    Click Add User.
If a database relating to WordPress does not already exist under the Databases section, create one:
Choose a name for your WordPress database (’wordpress’ or ‘blog’ are good), enter it in the Db field, and click Add Db.
Under Databases, select your WordPress username from the User dropdown, then select your WordPress database from the Db dropdown. Make sure All is checked under Privileges, then click Add User to Db.
When you return to the main MySQL Account Maintenance screen, cPanel will list information about the database you just created. You should see the username you just added to the database (with ALL PRIVILEGES), as well as a few sample Connection Strings for you to use in Perl or PHP scripts to connect to the database. ”

    Hope this helps,

    iain

    My current goals include:

1.) create more community, grow RSS base and email list
2.) write better, become a better copywriter
3.) monetize better, to find a business model

Well what got me to start a blog is that I heard it was a great way to get SE traffic. But what got me to take this course is to learn how. Also what got me to do affiliate marketing was actually Ros when I meet her at the Affiliate Summit East last year in Miami. I have been involved in Affiliate Marketing but as an Affiliate Manager for a company. I bought Ros’s book and learn somethings from it. I made one a site on tropical fishes

which Ros stated in her book pick things you are interested in. I have actually earned about $500 from the site so far.

Anthony reply on April 23, 2008 9:17 pm:

    Hi Ana,

Don’t worry. Ok, first we need to know if you have installed the FTP software on your computer. This software will enable you to upload the file to your site. Here are some FTP software you can choose from (any one will do):

    - WS-FTP
    - Smart_FTP
    - Cute_FTP

Once installed, you need to input your host (a.k.a your websitename.com) your username, and your password. You should have this from your hosting provider.

You mentioned…Your ‘export’ of the SEO thing was to UNZIP the file on your computer, correct?

You will need to use the FTP software to get those files to your site(online).

Then you can follow Rosalind’s video on how to upload the files.

    Take care,
    Anthony

Also, as a suggestion to help each other with inbound links, we all should put our links, via comments, on each other’s blogs. This will propel all the inbound links and ranking of the sites. Since there are so many blog on here, the link building effort should be very painless.

  240. Thank you for this informative free course and for helping people get started in blogging. Because I recently joined the free SpiderWeb Marketing System, I set up a Blogger blog using my Global Domains International domain site, http://thedoorway.ws/. Everything is working fine, but I sure miss the conveniences I have on my WordPress blog at http://thedoorway.org/blog/. WP is so much more powerful a platform, and the ABTheme I’m using there is a real time-saver. If you have a WP blog, consider getting the ABTheme. It saves me a ton of work.

  241. Here’s a tip for anyone using a WordPress blog. You’ll love the convenience that the OneClick Installer (http://anirudhsanjeev.org/projects/oneclick/) provides. Instead of having to download plugin and theme zip files, unzip them, and then ftp them to your site, with the OneClick Installer, you can just put the .zip file location url on your Windows clipboard, the go to the OneClick Install tab in your Dashboard, paste the .zip url into the Install from remote zip File slot, and click Go. OneClick Installer will download it and unzip it to the proper place in your blog’s folder tree.
Then just go into Plugins and Activate it. You can even do that from your browser, without logging into your site! At least that’s how it works on my WP blog on my own domain. Don’t do WordPress without it.

    Hi Ros and Anik

I purchased Ros’s book a few years back now (guess the newer version is the one with the blogging bits in it?), but have wanted to start a blog for ages now! I have a domain (purchased thru HostRoute) and a broadband package with Pipex. I have seen a lot of posts about Blogger (but also some bad press about when the shut down loads of ‘good’ blogs sometime ago?), but am still confused as to where I go from here…

Can I use my new domain name and host a blog thru my Pipex account, or do I have to take another hosting package, etc? (I don’t know whether Pipex has Wordpress loaded or not).

Thanks for taking time to read and hopefully reply — this is a great thread anyway!

    Hi Sylvia,

There are some negative things when you use a free blogtool like blogspot.com.

    1) Blogspot is in controle! When they want to stop your blog they can. When they do not support some plugins, they can! When they … you get it? Your are not in control of your own blog!

    2) No idea if this is your intention, but if you want to sell your blog at a later stage it will be a lot harder to do so when you have a freeblog, as to when you would have your own domain.

  252. I think one of the things that should be addressed, especially since it looks like many of you have blogs on Blogger, is why should we use Wordpress to install a blog on our own websites when we can use Blogger?

So far, Blogger doesn’t seem to be able to ping as many ping sites as Wordpress but since a Blogger blog is technically an external site, it serves as a source of links to my own website. Then on my own website, I use a RSS-Include function which shows titles of recent posts from my Blogger blog. This seems to satisfy Google that my website is still updated when I post to my Blogger blog.

    What do you all think?

    [Reply]

Paola reply on April 25, 2008 3:07 pm:

When you have a Feedburner account, you can set up an automatic ‘ping’ everytime the blog is updated.

  257. Hey there … great stuff!

I’m enjoying both your course and the comments on the various blogs folks are creating and working on.

My passion is increasing kindness, love and positive energy in the world, so I that is why I created this site: http://www.onemillionacts.com. Right now, the “home page” is set to the blog address since nothing else has been created.

I have recently started blogging (as in this week!), although I’ve been thinking about this campaign for a while. I have had some help from a couple of really awesome people in getting this up and running. Whew…glad for them, believe me (although if I had found your videos sooner, who knows?).

The prime reason for this site is to collect names of people who are willing to submit stories of kindness for eventual publication in a variety of media. My developer is creating a separate database to house the stories (which is why I was lucky enough to get some basic help in getting this set up). Once the publications start, there will be products available for purchase and there will be some form of agreement with one or more nonprofits so they get a portion of each sale.

The database won’t be ready for a few weeks and, in the meantime, I’m posting tips and quotes through my autoresponder and adding some of the stories I have already collected.

I have the “big picture” of what I’m doing and where I’m going with this campaign. Now, as the old saying goes, the devil is in the details.

I look forward to learning more and seeing what is possible!

Love and light, hugs and blessings

BusinessOver50.com, as the name implies, discusses business issues on the one hand. And it discusses my journey as an over 50 person into new technology and techniques, such as web 2.0. My original premise is that there is a generational divide that occurs around age 50. All this new “stuff” is not second nature to us. My audio and video service expired since I started. So, if you look at some of my earlier posts, my audios / videos on the blog don’t work. BusinessOver50.com

  291. Hi Rosalind,

Why not just go directly to http://www.wordpress.com and create an account and then create a blog? This is what I did in July last year and it was simple. Sorry, I don’t mean to ‘rain on your parade’ so to speak but I found you videos much more complicated.

Wordpress also automatically posts to bling.com so all the posts are transmitted for us. The other bling addresses on the list dont seem to work. A few of the first ones with ‘api’ show up as HTML code - I don’t understand what’s up with that. I admit I didn’t try all of them, just the first 10 or so.

On Wordpress, I clicked on the ’settings’ link as I did not see any ‘options’ and then went to the ‘write’ link but it all ends there and there is nowhere to upload all the other bling websites you had on the list.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

    Sincerely,

    Andrew

If you want a basic blog, GREAT!
If you want to do fancy things, you have to be ‘genned up’ on webmaster protocol.

I have several Wordpress blogs. Things are always going ’skewey’ with them.

Blogspot.com however, offer the simplest editting and settings layout imagineable. Just point, click, and it’s done.

Perhaps you could influence the Wordpress boys to follow their lead.

I’m following this to see how I can improve it.

Thanks for all the work involved.

  307. Anik & Rosalind,

I’m trying to upload the plugin files, per lesson #2.

I can’t seem to find the “Plugin” tab on my admin file: it’s not next to “Settings” as I hoped. Is this an “upgrade” item?

  315. It’s 6 months since I leapt into ’slogging at blogging’ virtually 5 long days a week, I am addicted to research, writing articles and posting to a ‘blog network’ of 5 other sites BUT I must be doing something seriously wrong- I only have 5 people on my list(!) and while I am keen to do affiliate marketing, produce my own e-book etc, I feel that what I have set up so far really needs knocking into shape (or niche refining) so I am following your pre course training ‘thirstily’!

  324. Hey Anik & Rosalind,

Only just got my hands on your info but this is terrific stuff.

I spent a bit longer fiddling around and getting things set up, BUT I have made a START!

Like so many, I have spent a ton of time, money & effort in gaining the knowledge to get involved in internet marketing. Usual information overload, confusion etc.

I would say to anyone, that a blog is essential.

Although my space is around teaching people about trading financial markets, I also have an online software company and it has taken me till now to realise the importance of internet marketing.

I am going to personally share my experiences of getting my internet business up and running online, as I do it.

I will share with people the steps I go through, what I use & learn as I do it.

So let’s hope that helps other people to take action, like your quality information.

    My blog is http://www.ron-carmichael.com
Just getting it all going but if I can share my experiences and get other people to take ACTION, then I hope that breeds success all round.

    Keep up the good work.

    To living life,

    Ron Carmichael

  327. I started three blogs about a month ago after I finished writing my first novel, a fantasy story for 12- to 14-year-olds called iWorld’s First Kiss. I’d always heard of the importance of building an online community before trying to publish a factual book and decided to apply the same principal to my work of fiction. Now that I have some content and am happy with the layouts, I am beginning to publicise the blogs by contributing to relevant blogs and forums whose target readerships are fantasy writers and fantasy fans.

My blogs include a guide to novel writing and two character blogs, one of which is the diary of the main character in my book.

    Hi Anik & Rosalind,
Thank you for this course. It took me about 10-15mins to install my blog and am really amazed because I bought a program sometime ago that required a WP blog with all the plugins. Being technically ungifted, I was put off with all the technical jargon and gave up. The program has been collecting dust ever since. I use Blogger however your way of doing WP has won me over.
    Thanks a lot

Does not look like Anik or Rosalind replies to any of the comments here.

Not sure how to help you though.

First, if you spend little time on the net and don’t have a web site, then why do you want to learn how to drive traffic to your blog? — that is, if you have a blog.

Second, get a domain name, then get hosting. Rosalind recommends BlueHost. (I don’t.) Then follow her instructions from thereon.

But if you don’t really need a web site or even a blog, then you don’t need these lessons.

  339. This is my website. I really need to own a website, but I do not know anything about website, so I give some money to a folk to give me a website that will give me some money from google ads; but the person is a nonentity like me. The site has been floating for up to seven months without generating, even small money.
Kindly, assist, to put this site in order. From the small knowledge I got some months ,now, I know, there is no good content, no traffic, etc. Whats the way forward?
Please, guide and lead me. I could not hear your videos audibly. Please, help me out of this mess.

    Hello to Rosalind and Anik,
While the first 2 videos with Anik are easy to understand
when I opened Ros’ video there is an immediate assumtion
that i’m on something called c panel or e panel. clueless
    What did I miss?

    [Reply]

  341. All right!

It only took 5 hours, BUT there was a 2.5 hour outage for son’s school-related efforts, and then I solved the problem pretty quickly, WITHOUT Fantastico!

I’d created a new database, but in doing so had exceeded my database-creation limit, SO all that happened was a new Username and new Password; SO when I changed wp-config.php I couldn’t get to square one, but the Error Pages narrowed my focus until I deleted one of my old databases, RE-CREATED my WP Blog-name (Zeolite) and re-edited (for the 19th thyme) wp-config.php

Then BINGO! In like Flynn… NOW comes the hard work, downloading and installing about 19 WP scripts and widgets!

And I only learned of Classroom today, but its already too late, you’re going to require money of me! Dang…

I am not able to get into Admin anymore. I went back therefore to delete the newly uploaded theme and that deleted my whole blog as well. What do I do?
