Lesson 3: The Power of The Long-Tail Keywords

by Anik Singal on April 19th, 2008 | Blogging | 121 Comments »

It’s that time again, time for us to push forward and learn the REAL power of blogs.

Before we do that - if you have not started yet - start now, already over 200 students have submitted their blogs to us!

Lesson 1 - How to install your wordpress blog…
Lesson 2 - How to prepare your blog for the search engines…

Next order of business - I’ve made THREE videos for you today, please take the next 20-30 minutes, close your door, turn off your phone and go through them all (and do Assignment #3).

The 3 videos below are:

1. Why Blogs? AND What Videos Are Coming This Week…
2. PROOF - The Power of the Long-Tail (My own stats)
3. Assignment #3 - How to write for the long-tail keywords…

So a big question we’ve heard is “Why blogs? or “What’s the difference between a blog and a website…” - I decided to make a little video to explain better - I also talk about all the neat videos we have planned for you THIS week (before the big day April 29).

Video #1 - What’s Coming Next & Why Blogs?

Click Below To Start Playing…

Video #2 - MY OWN PROOF - Blogs & Long Tail Keywords

This is a blog I started on February 19, 2008 and have done a total of 58 posts on - no more than 20 minutes a day. I have done NO marketing (except two things that I will show you on Wednesday).

NO - this is NOT a gazillion million visitors - but look at how AMAZING of a start I have, ALL because of long-tail keywords & blogs…

  6. Hey Anik these videos are completely awesome. Thank you so much for your simple Assignment step by step instructions!

I have my blog built and set up. Not very much traffic yet though and any criticism you could give would be greatly appreciated.

After what you’ve shown me I now know how I could set up a blog very simply, concisely and efficiently. With the right Niche market I’m sure I could really bank with what your teaching.

  8. I have spent a fair amount of money - to first simply understand the difference between a blog and a website.

I subscribed to Sherman Hu - I did not get what I was after. In fact, after I heard this video, I unsubscribed to his paid service - just $9.95 – not too much of money, but then I did not get what I was after.

In fact, I have even bought a revolution theme by Brian Gardner and I posted a question about the difference between blogging and a site 3 weeks back and I have not got an answer. Sure, that’s a site where people know a lot more than me – but then I would have upgraded to a more expensive pacakge.

For the first time I have understood the difference between a blog and a site.

You have really come down to the beginners level Anik and this is going to see your sales explode.

After I did some further research — It’s not for the

    to tweak it.

As for the FF extension/add-on it’s only version 1.0

So I would recommend “NOT” getting this one until you

  16. Hi Again Anik & Rosalind,

Well, another great job by you guys!

I figured out how to change the appearance of my blog and finished assignment #3 and even put up a post! (All quite an accomplishment for me!)

The thing is all kinds of adsense ads appeared–they keep changing and a lot of them have nothing to do with what my blog is about. I DO want to monetize (kind of the purpose behind all this)! I also did not have an adsense account, yet the ads were on there(???) So anyway I signed up for an account but don’t understand why ads would be there before they have given me one.?????

    My site is http://www.doctoryourhome.com/myblog

    Hi Karta,

Nice job on your start! I noticed if I went to the second page of your blog, (the seperate page on Loans) Google Adwords is listing ads that are directly relevant to your content. Now why it’s not listing relevant ads on your start page is a mystery. I can only think that your blog is new and as you ad more content, Google will catch up. Anyone else with suggestions?

Stefani reply on April 20, 2008 9:43 am:

    Hi Karla,
If you use themes to update your site (like I did) they may be pre-designed into the template and will actually have the designer’s Adsense account info in there. You need to replace their info with yours in the theme files. If you let me know which theme you used, I can check their files to see which ones you need to change and where. I had one theme that clearly labeled the adsense php files, and another where they were inside the other files. I also know on some themes, you can stop the adsense or limit it to certain pages, again it depends on the theme and how it was written.

    Hope this helps!

    [Reply]

Karla reply on April 20, 2008 4:42 pm:

    Hi Stefani,

Thanks for your help—the template is called Prosense. I like the layout (maybe don’t love the color, but it’s ok)!

What you said makes sense, I don’t know too much technical stuff at this point but I didn’t have an adsense account even set up yet. I set one up right away but don’t have it ready to go at this point. I’m stuck at figuring out how to set up a sitemap—I am working on it but it seems pretty complex to me. I tried downloading a plug-in but haven’t figured it out. Also Google said if you have a rss feed it could be used as a sitemap but I can’t figure that out either! The template does have an rss.

So what do you think of that mess???? LOL I guess.

    Thanks! Karla

    [Reply]

Bryant reply on April 20, 2008 8:56 pm:

Karla, Stefani is right about the adsense on your homepage. That isn’t yours (even though you have an account now) and you aren’t going to be paid if someone clicks through. I’d change the account info to yours before I did anything else.

Also as far as sitemaps go… Google toolbox lists a tool for creating them. Check out this page and the link is on the left. It requires Python which is probably installed by default but not all host install it so that might be a problem. That site also has info on how to setup and use the tool or create a sitemap manually.

Stefani reply on April 20, 2008 10:52 pm:

    Karla,
Hey! I’ve used prosense before, there are 7 files that start with “adsense” in their names. To get to these files, go to (on the old version) presentation, themes, and then theme files. You can then select each file and edit it on Wordpress, it will say “google ad client = pub and then a long number, you will replace their long number with your long google ad id number. On WP 2.5 you click on “design” and then “theme editor” to get to the list of files you need to put your id into.
Also, with most themes, you will find a webpage listed on the bottom of the page to the designer’s page. I got a lot of good info about how to make changes to the theme from the designer’s page (also, adsense now comes in blue and green, I believe). Hope this helps!

Great news Carson. Yes, you can import your blogger blog over to wordpress with 1 simple click of the Import button.
I read about it in the documentation section on WP first, and it was easy. Launch your WP Blog, go to Manage,go to import, enter info, grant access and Bam, it was done. Of course it had a different look, and some of the widgets didn’t transfer, but all the comment including pictures did. Here are the two links if you want to see

  20. Hey Ros,
On that SEO Video… I could use a little more info on the
setting up of the main page. (All in One SEO)

I filled it out the way I thought it should be and then
went and updated 2 post, (Per the video) and there wasn’t
a single thing changed… in fact the blog post title never
showed, just the name of my blog it’s self.

I also put up a blank .htaccess file, hoping WP would write
whatever it wants in it, but no JOY! So the /%postname%/
    still doesn’t work. :(

Along that same line; I found a website that will make
.htaccess for you, but not sure how to fill in the blanks
    to match what WP wants.

Stefani reply on April 20, 2008 9:37 am:

    Hey Bill,
I had a few issues getting things to change for me to. First, on the .htaccess file, I realized when I was getting error after error, I didn’t change the permissions to 666. Use your FTP software, log on to your server, find the .htaccess file, right click it, and look for “File Attributes” (mine is the last on the list). Click it, then set permissions to 666.
Also, I don’t know about the newer version of Wordpress, but on my older version, not only do I have to update the post, but on the bottom of the page there is a tab for “All in one SEO” and I have to click the little plus sign to open it, and then fill in the details down there as well. I did a couple of posts before I realized that little box was there.

If all else fails, I would re-check the permissions on your other files. I kept changing my theme, and then realized that I hadn’t been changing permissions on each of my new themes, so things weren’t working quite as well as they should.

After all that trial and error, my page seems to be working properly now.

    Hope that helps!

Ali reply on April 20, 2008 1:37 pm:

    Hi Bill,
if your problem still with you follow my instruction:
1- download this file form this link
    http://www.4shared.com/file/44751836/80fbd77f/htaccess.html
2- Upload that file ( which is .htaccess ) to your website where WP installed using FTP software or cPanel.
3- after you upload it give that file 666 permission.
4- go to your WP administration Panel under settings - Permalinks - choose Custom Structure and type /%postname%/ after that save it

    It should work!

actuality what I did is create a .htaccess file for you that accept mod_rewrite that’s it.
    Hope that helps

Ali — Thanks my Friend for the file.
But sadly no JOY! — Yes I had both my blank file and
this new file set to 666, (even tried 766 and 777).
I put it in the main blog folder, not in a sub-folder.
I think now I need to check with my hosting company and
see if MOD_Rewrite is turned on.

    What do you think?

    Ali

Bill reply on April 21, 2008 5:21 pm:

    Hey Ali and Everyone,
Just got a support ticket back from my hosting co.
They say that the MOD_Rewrite ‘is’ turned on and don’t
know why that tweak isn’t working… they again asked
    for more information.

Gave them the complete run down and all pathways, now
all I can do is wait for them to check it out.

    Sure is irritating

Ali — We had another guy back on Lesson 2 with the same
missing .htaccess file, so I pointed him over here to
    your link.

    Bill

Online Marketing Fundamentals reply on April 25, 2008 7:13 am:

    Hey Bill

I had a similar problem, and even though the hosting company said everything was OK - mod rewrite etc - it made NO difference.

It seems it is a “common” problem with WP 2.5 worse luck.

Whatever was going on… it seemed that WP would simply NOT create or write to an .htaccess file… and even when I put the right one there… it still wouldn’t work!

So… as I was NOT able to use the “pretty” permalinks option - i.e /%postname%/ - I had NO option but to move the whole domain to another host which I knew it worked on.

The “alternative” is to try the /index.php/%postname%/ pathlink structure - that will probably work…

Except it looks like… well, it doesn’t look good!

    Cheers

  35. Hey guys… another great lesson. I’ve been using NicheBot for keyword research but I’m still learning HOW to use it successfully. Following your vid on using Google’s keyword tool I got a quick list lightning fast. Couldn’t stop there so I built several lists for different categories in my blog… now I got a bunch of topics to write on. Thanks

    Bryant

    [Reply]

  36. Using long tail keywords in your post’s title is essential to better ranking in the search engines. For example, the results below are because I used the keywords in the title!

A topic that I have been searching for recently is
    wordpress membership plugins

And while I found LOTS of information, most of it was either out of date (referred to stuff no longer available) or not really useful (:

Google lists over 220,000 results for those keywords, so it was an effort to even get through the first 50-100 or so sites to find out what I wanted (which means it is going to be hard for everyone else too!)

So - after three days of agonising research, I decided to write a post (on April 1) summarising my results of looking for wordpress membership plugins

That post has actually generated at least 96 new visits for 67 keyword phrases to my site (to 20th April) along with another 8 visits from a teaser post on another blog of mine.

It is currently positioned on Google at #16 for those long tail keywords - and #1 for the key PHRASE “wordpress membership plugins” (which is when people search for something with “quote marks around the phrase”).

With a little bit of careful keyword anchor text in links to the post — as I did in the link above :) — I can push it up the ranking even further… and get even more visitors to my site.

Notice when you check that post, I am using it as link bait to get people to check out a couple of other things I am promoting!

    Some food for thought.

    Cheers

Hi Mike, I just checked out your blog and you offer good suggestions. I think the last post would have been a great place to promot a professional e-mail service to your subscribers that still don’t have an account set up with any one. Your goal should be to make more money from your affiliate links than from adsense. Keep going though as you are off to a good start.
Find your long-tail keywored that you want to use in your post then check your affiliate networks for suitable merchants. Picking a good merchant can be time consuming though. Rosalind spells it all out in her book. Check it out.

Hi Shannon, I’ve played with Wordpress for a while and the whole cpanel thing totally opened it up for me once and for all. I know it feels like a steep climb to learn it, cos it was for me, but believe me, after a few years of trying, it is totally worth it.

Justin reply on April 21, 2008 6:50 am:

    Shannon,
Rosalind installed WordPress on her website. WordPress comes with CPanel. The reason for having your own site rather than a site hosted by another is that you gain professionalism. Web hosting is fairly cheap. If you don’t already have it you can get set up for as little as three months to try it out. I suggest that you buy a year or two worth of hosting at a time because it is cheaper in the long run.
    Good Luck,
    Justin

Hey Justin… I’m not trying to be picky, but you’ve said a couple of times here that “wordpress comes with cpanel” which can be misinterpreted by some…

It’s actually cPanel first… It’s the main server management program… and cPanel comes with Fantastico… then Fantastico comes with Wordpress.

It’s an important distinction and better aids in the understanding of what goes where :)

You can use a hosted service like Google’s Blogger or WordPress but ultimately you will have to move it to your own hosted domain if you want to be successful. Its best to start with a fresh blog on your domain. Then you will build traffic to your site not Google’s.

I think Ros recommends Bluehost and that is really all you will need to get started. CPanel makes installing WordPress very simple. With your own blog you will be able to experiment with loads of plugins and themes to really get it to do what you want. So as you learn how to use it you can customize it. Pretty soon you will be a pro.

I did notice in playing with the google tool that some if the keyword strings did not have any paid advertisers. So would it be more beneficial to choose those keywords since in theory they should have less competition? Or is is better to choose keywords that are popular?

    Hi Claudia,
Great site. You are on the right track with your keyword search looking for keywords without advertising as these are over-looked keywords. They might be so for a reason though. To the right of advertising is the search volumes. If there is any, or more search volume than advertising competition than go ahead and use that keyword in your post.
If I am having trouble finding keywords with little advertising I choose one with less advertising than most and start my search over again using that keyword. Eventually I come up with an appropriate keyword that has search volume and few competing advertisers.
    Hope this helps,
    Justin

    [Reply]

Online Marketing Fundamentals reply on April 22, 2008 7:25 am:

    Hi James

Short answer - better to have your own domain - because that means the content is yours and you can move it wherever you want. If you have content on a remote blog like wordpress or blogger and do something naughty… well, that’s the end of you and your content the moment you get killed!

Long answer - have BOTH, along with LOTS of hubpages, squidoo lenses, and a few other “remote blogs” and point them all at your main domain, an some random cross linking between each other using keyword anchor text in the links…

While it means extra work… the extra content you write, and cross linking and indexing etc going on is well worth it in the long term.

Just don’t copy, word for word, the content onto all of these sites… or you’ll get into trouble with the big “g”.

And don’t forget some good old article submission once a week too… pointing again to your main domain.

AND… don’t make all these links to your site go to the home page - some “deep linking” to internal pages is also necessary.

    Cheers

Well I do for the fish site, that has been earning some cash of course I want it to earn more.

I do have a Squidoo lens on the same topic.

But if I wanted to start a new niche site and really hesitant on buying a domain.

    [Reply]

Online Marketing Fundamentals reply on April 23, 2008 6:45 am:

Hesitant? Why? Domain $10. Hosting under $10 a month, or $20 a month with room for 20 domains and Autoresponder etc if you use UMC. That’s it - nothing more to spend!

It can’t be the expense that’s holding you back :) Yeah… I KNOW you’re only a college student… but seriously, $20 a month is within the budget of anyone! If not - cut down on the fags, booze and parties a little :)

But hang on… it seems you’ve already got you own hosting… so what’s the problem with your host - they appear to have add-on domains even in the basic plan!

Because until you own your OWN site, you can’t build an asset!

While YOUR content resides on other people’s sites… it’s just not really yours. If ANYTHING happens to those sites which results in your content being scrapped, then you’ve just wasted all your time building it there.

These remote sites are to build links, get indexed for different variations of your keywords, to send traffic back to your main site, and boost the PR there.

Meanwhile… back at the ranch… do the research into the niche you’re thinking about. If you reckon it looks promising… then just give it a go! It’s only going to cost $10 and some time….

The expense ain’t gonna kill ya, but procrastination will!

    :)

    Cheers
    Stephen

P.S. I too had LOTS of fish when I was at uni - hundreds of tropicals - mainly swords and guppies! Great therapy… until I had to move them at the end of the year and take them home… but that’s another story!

Got my site up with one post. Site is http://www.hawaii4newbies.com/myblog/ Two things are wrong (other than it’s still a very plain site). I thought my site would be hawaii4newbiesdotcom without the /myblog/ . If I enter just the .com version I get an index page.
Also, when I bring up the site, there’s clickable links under the Navigation titles on the right side, one of which goes directly to my dashboard. The only “Page” I’ve made active is my about me page titled “meet the guy who writes this” Other than the Categories and Archives there shouldn’t be anything else active. Anyone interested in bringing up my site and see if the Blogroll and Meta links are actually there.

    Gene,
Your default ‘home page’ is the index.html ‘in’ the .com
    address.

If you want it to go directly to your blog, then you would
have to put “ALL” the WP pages and folders into your root
folder and delete the index page and the ‘myblog’ folder.

Now your blog would be your home page at the .com address.

In the Setup/Options tab in WordPress Admin… under the General sub-tab…

There’s a place there where you specify the directory you want your blog to be in (if different to where WP is installed)

If you’ve accidentally pointed it to the sub-directory “blog” then just change the directory in that field! In your case, just put http://www.hawaii4newbies.com and click SAVE

As Bill suggested… if there IS an index.html file in the root directory, kill it!

As long as my post comes up on a page that says Hawaii4newbies.com, I guess I’ll be happy.
But I do want to get ride of that index file ’cause if somebody just types in hawaii4newbiesdotcom, they’ll get that index page. Can I just go in to the files and zap it?
Is there a service that will take me in hand and re-establish my blog site?

The best assistance was received from the answer by Darwin that said “I ran into the same thing with Blue Host, I wen to their Forums and found out, that for the 2.5 they don’t use Fantastico they use Simple Scripts, which is in Cpanel also.
You need to sign up with Simple Scripts, it’s free and you just have to enter your email and they send you a password, you do all this in Cpanel, hope that helps.”

I got on the phone with Bluehost and they said to go into fantastico and Remove my wordpress (which was fine because I hadn’t posted anything yet - which he was concerned about) and then went to Simple Scripts and got Wordpress 2.5 there. This was after I added Winzip to my computer to upgrade direct from the Wordpress site and that did not work. This was way easier.

Their tech support said that Simple Scripts stays updated better than Fantastico it is just that it is their program so people don’t know as much about it.

Also, he said you can’t have fantastico and simple scripts both on your computer as they are not compatible.

It was really surprisingly easy to work it in. I already had a post I wanted to write about money; I just gave it the title and looked for places where I could throw in the phrase. It was fun!

I look forward to reporting back here on how it affects my traffic. Normally I get between about 25-50 hits a day; it’s really about 30 with spikes on days that have memes like Sunday Salon attached. My current goals are to get more regular, recurring visitors, and to reach an average of 100 hits a day.
